Frequently Asked Question about Pagus

Is Pagus a ministry?

What most people really mean is, "Is Pagus a non-profit ministry?" The answer is no. Nathan and I are artists who are using are gifts and talents to provide for our families and ourselves. However, the work of Pagus is ministry, providing Biblically based teachings on the arts, artist, and their role in the experience and expression of faith.

How do Jewish studies fit into the study of the arts?

Three reasons:

  1. Christians who know what they believe are better prepared to answer questions asked by nonbelievers and those seeking to better understand matters of faith.
  2. The New Testament does not specifically address Arts or the Artist, and the brief references in the Hebrew Scriptures are easily missed. However, rabbinic commentaries explain the role of the artist and the communities responsibility to the artist.
  3. Dr. Young is an amazing teacher and it would be unforgivable to not give others the opportunity to experience what we have had the privilege of enjoying.

Contrary to popular belief, artists are highly analytical and often approach new ideas with questions. Too often the Church has been unable to answer these questions and has lost credibility in the eyes of the artistic community. While we in no way claim to have all the answers, we hope to supply some and provide tools for others to find more.

Why are the arts important to the Church?

Throughout Scripture the ability to convey truth through creative forms is utilized. It is through the interpretation of the artist that the means of relationship are either created or enhanced. Genesis is the account of how through creation God allowed humanity to know Him. In Exodus the account of Bezalel constructing the Tabernacle demonstrates how human creation can provide a way of entering into relationship with God. The writings of the psalmists and prophets demonstrate the use of artistic skill in communicating to man God's heart. If we embrace the principle that all Scripture is given for example, then the example of the artist is one who has the ability to reveal aspects of God's nature that are unknowable apart from inspiration.

What are your qualifications to teach on the Arts in relationship to the Church?

As an artist growing up in a traditional Church, I (Emily) often wondered how my gifts served my faith. Later, I found that the questions I faced were the questions of many artists. I returned to school in hopes of finding our answers and I am currently working on my Masters Thesis on Art and Prophecy. Most of the material for my Thesis comes directly from the original Hebrew and Greek, and rabbinic literature. Throughout my research I looked for Christian sources that explain the roles, rights, and responsibilities of the artist, but found both quantity and quality to be lacking. Most writings either demonstrated no knowledge of the artistic experience, discounting it completely, or were the strictly the product of hopeful speculation without a solid academic foundation.

Nathan is a singer/songwriter who has worked both in the Church and in secular arenas. He knows the challenges that face the Christian in the artist's world and the difficulties of being an artist in the Church. He moved to Norman, Oklahoma to help with a church and then to Dallas to be a part of Mars Hill Church. He is currently playing show in the Dallas area, and works closely with Art, Love, Magic,(a prominent Dallas artist group.) and will soon release his first album "Naming my Monsters." He continues to study independently both through the lawful purchase of books and purloining mine. His music and movie collection reflect his ability to stay connected to our current artistic culture.

What makes Pagus different from other Arts ministries?

We have purposed to combine both education and experience in our approach. We recognize the need to reach and support the artist while educating the Church to their need and responsibility to the artist. Nathan and I have both pursued a career in the arts and know the challenges that face the artist from experience. Having grown up in the Church, we also recognize the rich history and traditions of the Church. We believe that there is mutual need shared by the artist and the Church that must be explored and addressed if either party is to be as effective as they were created to be. It is our belief that in order to achieve our goals we must address both the artist and the Church while creating an environment that promotes conversation and relationship.

Does an artist have to be a Christian to be involved with Pagus?

Let me be emphatic- NO. We believe that the inspiration is a gift from God and therefore is to be respected no matter who gives life to it. We believe that change comes through relationship, and to adopt an isolationist mentality would be in violation of Scriptural mandates.

We do reserve the right to disagree with, or even to not like, all styles, forms, and genres. However, we also are willing to acknowledge the artistic merit of those works we may not endorse. (We don't always like each others work.) Those wishing to participate in Pagus events should be aware that showings will be determined by Pagus and that determination will be based on the appropriateness of individual works for each venue.

As an artist, how can Pagus benefit me?

Aside from the educational aspects, Pagus will be producing art showings, concerts, and poetry and book readings in which we will feature artists associated with Pagus. We are currently working on our products page where we will make available prints, CDs, and books that have been created by our featured artists. We also encourage you to send us your questions about the spiritual and practical matters. We may have the answers or direct you toward the resources to find the answers.

I'm an artist, how do I get to perform (or be shown) at a Pagus event?

True art should have authenticity integrity, and originality. Good art stands on its own; great art obscures the artist all together leaving the audience to know the work without bias or agenda. It causes the viewer/listener to stop and participate with your work on intimate level leaving no room for the artist in the experience. That is what we are looking for.

With that said. Send us you a copy of your work. Better yet, set up a time to meet with one of us where we will discuss you, your work, if and how it would mesh with Pagus. One fundamental goal for us is to help the artist succeed, and we want to help you do just that. And if you haven't achieved greatness in your art yet, don?t worry. It is only what we are looking for, not what we require.

Should Christians view, listen to, or read non-Christian art?

In truth, you already do. The influence of the artist is inescapable. It is an artist who designed your clothes, furniture, the labels on your soup cans, and so much more. If you watch TV, read a book, or listen to the radio you have engaged both Christian and non-Christian art. On a deeper level, there is no one answer to this question. Not all art should be embraced, and that includes some so-called Christian art, simply because it lacks originality and integrity or fails move the viewer beyond cheap sentimentality. As Christians we must discern what we are to allow in our lives and what we will keep out. Paul addresses this question in 1 Corinthians 8, only the object in question is meat offered to idols.

We at Pagus view, listen, and read non-Christian works on a regular basis. Aside from really enjoying a lot of it, we use it as tools to understand and reach our culture. However, we do not offer this as a blanket endorsement of these art forms nor do we recommend this approach for everyone. We have a strict code of accountability with each other and outside people to ensure we continue to address our spiritual needs.
